South Dakota Window Tint Laws Explained: Legal VLT Limits for 2026

Anyone who has driven I-90 across the state in July knows the prairie sun is relentless, and tint is the cheapest comfort upgrade a vehicle can get. So here is the number that matters: South Dakota lets your front side windows carry tint down to 35% VLT, with a generous 9% enforcement tolerance written into the law itself. Your rear glass can go darker, to 20% VLT, and the windshield is mostly hands-off.

How dark can you legally tint in South Dakota?

Front side windows down to 35% VLT and rear windows down to 20% VLT, per the South Dakota Codified Laws. Under SDCL § 32-15-2.4, film on the windshield and front side windows may not drop the combined light transmittance below 35%, with a 9% enforcement tolerance. SDCL § 32-15-2.5 sets the rear windows behind the driver at 20%, again with the 9% cushion.

Two tint beliefs South Dakotans get wrong

Belief: 20% is legal everywhere because it’s legal in back. The reality is the front and rear carry different numbers. The 20% limit only covers windows behind the driver; up front you are held to 35%. Wrap 20% film around all four doors and the fronts are out of bounds.

Belief: the 9% tolerance means I can buy 26% film for the front. The tolerance is a measurement cushion for enforcement, not a license to install darker. The legal target is 35% on the front; the 9% is there so a film reading a couple points light at a roadside check isn’t an automatic ticket. Buy to the limit, not to the cushion.

Windshield, reflectivity, and color

The windshield rule in SDCL § 32-15-2.9 is simple: no sunscreening device may obstruct the driver’s clear view, and film cannot extend below the AS-1 line or the lowest point of the sun visor. That AS-1 marking is defined in the federal glazing standard, FMVSS 205 (49 CFR 571.205). The South Dakota tint sections don’t spell out reflectivity or color limits the way some states do, so the practical guardrails are the VLT numbers and that clear-view windshield standard.

Penalties and what you must keep

Each of these tint sections makes a violation a Class 2 misdemeanor in South Dakota, which is the same class the state uses for many minor traffic-equipment offenses. The real-world cost is usually a fix-it stop, the fine, and the cost of redoing film that went on too dark. There is no certificate or sticker requirement written into these sections, and just as importantly, no medical exemption is written into them either — so don’t count on a doctor’s note to cover darker glass here.

What to do: Spec 35% for the front doors and, if you want privacy, 20% for the windows behind you. Keep the windshield clear below the visor line, and skip any plan that leans on a medical exemption — this chapter doesn’t provide one.
