Missouri Window Tint Laws Explained: Legal VLT Limits for 2026

Missouri’s tint law has a quirk that catches a lot of drivers off guard, in a good way. The number you need up front is 35% VLT on the windows beside the driver. But here’s the twist most people miss: the statute regulates your front windows and windshield, and stays quiet on the glass behind you.

How dark can you legally tint in Missouri?

The front sidewing vents and windows immediately to the left and right of the driver must have a light transmission of 35% or more (±3%) and luminous reflectance of 35% or less (±3%). That’s the operative language in subsection 1 of Missouri Revised Statutes § 307.173. The same section bans sun-screening film on the windshield except the factory-tinted top strip. Notably, the statute does not assign a VLT number to rear or back side windows.

Does Missouri limit rear-window tint?

Myth: Missouri caps every window at 35% the way it caps the front. Read the statute and you’ll see it only sets a VLT figure for the front sidewing vents and windows beside the driver, plus the windshield ban. It assigns no transmittance number to the glass behind the driver — a genuinely unusual feature.

Myth: there’s no legal route to darker front glass. There is, but it’s a permit, not a self-issued note. The Department of Public Safety can issue a permit for darker front windows to a person with a serious medical condition when their physician prescribes it, and that permit even extends to relatives in the household.

Reflectivity, color, and the windshield rule

Front film reflectance is capped at 35%, so mirror-bright fronts won’t pass. The windshield is the strict zone: added sun-screening film is prohibited outright, leaving only the manufacturer’s standard top band and factory-tinted glass. That top band corresponds to the area outside the AS-1 driver’s-view zone defined by the federal glazing rule, FMVSS 205 (49 CFR 571.205).

Penalties and what you must keep

Violating § 307.173 is a Class C misdemeanor, and a vehicle wearing a historical license plate is exempt from the section entirely.

What to do: keep front windows at 35% or lighter, carry your DPS permit if you have one, and remember that a permissive rear-window statute doesn’t mean an officer won’t ask about visibility.
