Kentucky Window Tint Laws Explained: Legal VLT Limits for 2026

Tint rules feel like fine print until an officer is squinting at your driver’s window on a Bluegrass back road. Let’s clear it up: in Kentucky your front side windows must read 35% VLT or more, while the windows behind you can drop all the way to 18%. That split is the whole ballgame, and the rest is reflectivity and paperwork.

How dark can you legally tint in Kentucky?

Front side windows must transmit 35% or more of visible light with reflectance no higher than 25%, and windows behind the driver must transmit at least 18% — 8% on a multipurpose passenger vehicle — with reflectance capped at 35%. Those figures come straight from subsections (3) and (4) of Kentucky Revised Statutes § 189.110, as amended effective July 15, 2024. Every percentage carries a 3% tolerance.

Does Kentucky treat every window the same?

Myth: if 35% is the rule up front, it’s the rule everywhere. Kentucky is one of the states that splits front from rear. Glass behind the driver legally drops to 18%, and an SUV or van — a multipurpose passenger vehicle — can go as low as 8% on those rear windows.

Myth: a doctor’s note gets you darker front glass. This one trips people up. Read § 189.110 closely and you’ll find no medical exemption anywhere in it. Unlike several neighboring states, Kentucky never wrote that allowance into the statute, so darker-than-legal front tint stays illegal regardless of a medical condition.

Reflectivity, color, and the windshield rule

Front-window film can’t exceed 25% reflectance, and rear film is capped at 35%, so Kentucky actively limits mirror-look tint. On the windshield, you may run either a transparent strip above the AS-1 line or full-windshield film at 70% or more transmittance that isn’t red or yellow. That AS-1 boundary is defined by the federal glazing standard, FMVSS 205 (49 CFR 571.205).

Penalties and what you must keep

Applying out-of-spec film is a Class B misdemeanor, and the installer must give you a self-destructive label affixed to the inside left door jamb certifying compliance.

What to do: keep the door-jamb compliance label intact, don’t count on a medical note for front windows, and make sure any blacked-out rear glass is backed by both side mirrors.
