Alabama Window Tint Laws Explained: Legal VLT Limits for 2026

Myth: “An officer can ticket me just for looking too dark.” Reality: Alabama is one of the states that requires proof by instrument. The statute says light transmission “shall be measured with a device or instrument capable of measuring light transmission before a person may be charged,” and the officer must be equipped with that meter before stopping you. An eyeball judgment alone does not make the case.

Myth: “My SUV’s back windows can be darker than the limit.” Reality: Alabama applies the same 32% VLT and 20% reflectance numbers to the rear windshield and side windows across vehicle types. There is no separate darker rear allowance for SUVs and trucks here.

Reflectivity, color, and the windshield

Reflectance is a hard limit in Alabama — your film cannot exceed 20% reflectance on the windows it covers, so mirrored looks are out.
