Connecticut Window Tint Laws Explained: Legal VLT Limits for 2026

If you’ve heard Connecticut is tough on tint, you’ve heard right — but tough isn’t the same as confusing. Here’s the anchor: your front side windows must let through 35% VLT, give or take 3%, and reflect back no more than 27%. Lock that in and the rear-glass and sticker rules are easy to follow.

How dark can you legally tint in Connecticut?

Front side wing vents and windows must carry a total light transmission of 35% (±3%) with luminous reflectance no greater than 27% (±3%). The side windows behind the driver and the rear-most window share the same 35% transmission floor, but their reflectance cap tightens to 21%. Those numbers live in subsection (c) of Connecticut General Statutes § 14-99g.

Is Connecticut really that rigid?

Myth: there’s no relief for bigger vehicles. There is. Subsection (c)(6) exempts windows behind the driver on any truck, motor bus, trailer, mobile manufactured home, or multipurpose passenger vehicle, provided the vehicle wears outside mirrors that reflect at least 200 feet of highway to the rear.

Myth: a medical condition means nothing to Connecticut. Not true — subsection (b) exempts a driver shielded from the sun for medical reasons, but it isn’t a free pass. You apply in writing to the commissioner with documentation from a physician or optometrist licensed in the state, and you carry the result.

Reflectivity, color, and the windshield rule

Connecticut caps front reflectance at 27% and rear at 21%, and no legal film may be mirror-like in appearance. Windshield film is allowed only as a top band whose bottom edge sits at least 29 inches above the driver’s seat, and it can’t be red or amber. The federal glazing standard, FMVSS 205 (49 CFR 571.205), sets the underlying AS markings the state’s multipurpose-vehicle definition relies on.

Penalties and what you must keep

Each violation is an infraction, and every after-factory tinted window must wear a state-approved compliance sticker in its lower left corner — the kind that self-destructs if peeled.

What to do: confirm each tinted window carries its self-destructive sticker, file with the DMV commissioner before relying on a medical exemption, and verify big-vehicle rear tint is paired with 200-foot mirrors.
