Washington Window Tint Laws Explained: Legal VLT Limits for 2026

Here’s a refreshing surprise for anyone bracing for a strict number: Washington uses one clean standard for almost every window. Films on any window except the windshield must let through 24% VLT or more. No separate front-versus-rear math — just 24% and a reflectance cap, then a couple of windshield and SUV details.

How dark can you legally tint in Washington?

Net film on any window other than the windshield must have a light transmission of 24% or more and total reflectance of 35% or less, with outside mirrors on both sides. That single standard, set in subsection (5)(a) of Revised Code of Washington § 46.37.430, applies equally to your front side windows, back side windows, and rear glass. The windshield is the lone exception.

Does Washington split front and rear like other states?

Myth: front windows have to be lighter than the back. In Washington they don’t — the 24% floor is the same on every non-windshield window for a standard car. The split shows up only for specific vehicles.

Myth: SUVs follow the same numbers as a sedan. Not behind the driver. Subsection (5)(b) lets hearses, limousines, ambulances, and any vehicle the manufacturer calls a truck, motor home, or multipurpose passenger vehicle run below 24% on glass behind the driver, as long as reflectance stays at or under 35% and both side mirrors are present.

Reflectivity, color, and the windshield rule

Reflectance can’t exceed 35%, mirror-finish film is banned, and so are red, gold, yellow, and black materials plus any spray-on liquid tint. Windshield film is limited to the top six inches and may not reach into the AS-1 portion of the glass — the driver’s-view zone defined by the federal glazing rule, FMVSS 205 (49 CFR 571.205). Clear UV-only film is allowed across the windshield.

Penalties and what you must keep

Operating with illegal film is a traffic infraction, and a for-profit installer must affix a sticker to the driver’s door post showing the business name and state tax ID.

What to do: make sure the door-post sticker is in place, carry your physician’s written verification if you have one, and confirm any darker SUV or truck glass keeps both outside mirrors.
