Tennessee Window Tint Laws Explained: Legal VLT Limits for 2026

Tennessee keeps things mercifully simple, and that’s good news if you’ve been drowning in other states’ fine print. One number does most of the work: every tinted window on your vehicle must let through 35% VLT or more. Front, rear, doesn’t matter — 35% is the line, with the windshield treated on its own.

How dark can you legally tint in Tennessee?

The statute ties every window to the federal standard: tint is illegal if any window drops below 35% visible light transmittance, or if the windshield falls below 70% (outside the manufacturer’s standard shade band). That’s the core of Tennessee Code § 55-9-107. There’s no separate, darker rear-glass allowance for a standard car — front doors in particular can never be exempted below 35%.

Is Tennessee tint really one-size-fits-all?

Myth: you can run limo tint in the back like you can in some neighboring states. Not on a standard vehicle — Tennessee’s 35% floor applies to every window the same way, so dark rear glass is just as illegal as dark fronts. Only certain federally permitted vehicle models and law-enforcement vehicles get a rearward exception.

Myth: a doctor’s note carries no weight here. It carries real weight. Subsection (b) lets a driver with a light-sensitive medical condition submit a physician’s statement to the commissioner; the department’s medical review board evaluates it and, if warranted, the commissioner issues a certificate or decal for the approved darkness.

Reflectivity, color, and the windshield rule

Tennessee’s statute leans on the 35% VLT and 70% windshield thresholds and doesn’t impose a separate reflectance or color percentage the way some states do. The 70% windshield floor and the 35% window floor both reference the federal glazing standard, FMVSS 205 (49 CFR 571.205), which is why the manufacturer’s factory shade band at the top of the glass stays legal.

Penalties and what you must keep

A professional installer must affix a compliance label to the lower right corner of the driver’s window and give you a signed receipt to keep with your registration.

What to do: keep the installer’s signed receipt with your registration, carry your medical decal if you have one, and don’t refuse a field comparison test — refusal alone is a misdemeanor.
